The Free Trade movement died of a profound constitutional malady. Like so many other well-meant reforming inspirations, it had attacked symptoms but stopped short of causations. All that the Free Trade champions said against protection and its evils was true; it was indeed an overflowing fountain-head of trouble. But it was only the outgrowth of an underlying condition. So long as the profit system was to be retained, Protection or Free Trade could make little difference to the lives of the masses, and even Henry George purposed to leave the profit system virtually intact. The real source of the world’s distress was production for profit and nothing could remedy or seriously affect the disorders arising from that source except the substitution of production for use.
